The personal tutor for A Level & GCSE

A personal tutor for every student.
One that thinks like the examiner.

Students practise real past-paper questions and Markaroo coaches them on their own weaknesses, the Socratic way: it marks each answer against your board’s mark scheme, then asks the questions that get them to the top band by themselves. Teachers set homework through their classes, approve every mark, and see exactly where the class is losing marks. It supplements your marking: more practice for students, no extra workload for staff.

YouLower interest rates are the most effective.
TutorAlways? UK rates were near zero from 2009 and growth stayed weak. What did it depend on?
YouConfidence. If firms won’t borrow, the cut does little.
TutorThat’s your evaluation. Now write it as the condition on your judgement.

Learning, not answers

A chatbot gives students the answer. A tutor makes them find it.

Markaroo is built to do what a good teacher does in a one-to-one: read the answer properly, point to the line costing the marks, and ask the question that makes the student fix it.

01

It asks, it doesn’t tell

One sharp question at a time, the way an examiner would push you. It will not write an essay or hand over a model answer, so the improvement is the student’s own.

02

Grounded in the real mark scheme

Every answer is marked against your exam board’s levels and assessment objectives on real past-paper questions, not against whatever the open internet says.

03

It knows each student

It remembers each student’s recurring habits, such as weak evaluation, generic context or no final judgement, and coaches on those until they stop costing marks.

Students taught one-to-one by a tutor did about two standard deviations better than students taught in a conventional class. The challenge has always been giving every student that tutor.

Benjamin Bloom, “The 2 Sigma Problem”, Educational Researcher, 1984

In a trial with nearly 1,000 high-school students, those who practised with a standard ChatGPT-style assistant scored 17% lower once it was taken away. A tutor version with guardrails largely removed that harm.

Bastani et al., “Generative AI without guardrails can harm learning”, PNAS, 2025
Adaptive learning

It finds each student’s weak spot, then coaches them on it

Every marked answer shows which skills are holding a student back. The tutor uses that to choose what to question next, and teachers see the same picture for the whole class.

Student · the Socratic tutor
StudentI don’t know – you tell me?
ExaminerI can’t tell you the answer directly, as that would be writing your response for you. But let’s look at what ‘weighing’ means in an essay.

In your conclusion, you presented two factors: the n-firm concentration ratio and CMA intervention. How might you argue that one of these is more crucial than the other, or that one depends on the other?
StudentI think I did argue that if the n-firm concentration ratio was that of a monopoly/oligopoly, then it is crucial the CMA act in a certain way
ExaminerYou’re right, you did argue that the CMA’s actions are crucial given a certain concentration ratio. That’s excellent analysis.

To push that into explicit weighing: is the presence of a high concentration ratio the primary determinant of consumer interest, or is it the effectiveness of the CMA’s response? Which has the final say?

A student stuck on evaluation gets questions on evaluation, not the answer.

How it works

Practice, homework and marking in one place

Students and teachers use the same tutor, so a student practises against the same standard their teacher marks to.

Students

Practise

Answer real past-paper questions any time. Each one is marked in seconds with the line costing the marks, then the tutor talks it through and re-marks the rewrite.

Teachers

Set

Create a class, then pick a past question with its mark scheme as the week’s homework. Students answer typed, or hand in a photo of their handwritten script.

What we’re seeing in schools

AI isn’t replacing teacher marking. It’s supplementing it.

Students get more practice, and staff get no extra workload. Teachers still set the work, approve every mark and make the judgement.

“As we progressed through the Lent Term I could see the accuracy of the software improving. … The software allows more assignments to be set and marked than would normally be the case, offering flexibility and breathing space to keep students working hard throughout the year.”
Sam Cleary, Head of Social Sciences, Tonbridge School
For students

A tutor on every answer, not just the ones a teacher has time to read

  • The Examiner Report on every answer: your level, the reason, and the one change worth the most marks
  • Talk it through with a tutor that questions your reasoning instead of rewriting it
  • Rewrite and get re-marked, and watch your predicted grade move
  • Your technique profile, plus past papers, revision notes and flashcards that pick your weakest topic next
For teachers

Set the homework. Keep the judgement. Get more practice marked without more marking.

  • Classes and homework: invite your students and co-teachers, set work from a full bank of past papers
  • Marking you approve: whole papers, handwritten scripts included, marked as draft for you to edit and release
  • Class insights: hand-in rate, class average and the topics costing the most marks
  • Full visibility: read every tutor conversation a student has about your homework
  • Department view: share marking, calibrate standards and follow students across classes, for heads of department and senior leaders
For heads of department

Spend the revision-guide budget on practice students actually do

Departments spend every year on revision guides and workbooks that mostly stay in bags. Markaroo puts that money into something every student uses: a tutor on every answer, homework marked to the mark scheme, and a clear view of the class for you.

It starts with a free pilot. Benchmark it blind: mark a set yourself first, then compare your marks with Markaroo’s before you rely on it. Then move to one school licence covering every student and teacher in the subject.

Built for schools, teachers and parents to trust

A teacher always decides

In a school, every mark is a draft until a teacher releases it. Students always see the reasoning, never just a number.

No shortcuts

The tutor will not write essays or homework answers. Teachers can read every conversation about their homework.

Frequently asked questions

Will students use it to do their homework for them?
No. The tutor is built not to write answers. It asks one question at a time about the student’s own reasoning and never hands over a model essay. In a class, teachers can read every conversation a student has about their homework.
How accurate is the marking?
Markaroo is trained on board-specific mark schemes and standardisation materials. In our pilot, AI-generated marks have shown strong alignment with senior examiner benchmarks. In schools, every mark and comment is a draft for teacher review. For students, every mark comes with the examiner’s reasoning, never just a number.
Do teachers stay in control?
Yes. Teachers choose what to set, and every mark on homework is a draft until they release it. They can edit any mark or comment, add their own note, or return the work for a redraft.
What do teachers see about their class?
For each class: who has handed in, the class average, the topics where most students are losing marks (weakest first), the hardest question, each student’s work and marks, and every tutor conversation about the homework.
Is student data secure?
All data is hosted on UK-based servers and processed in compliance with UK GDPR. Student data is never shared with third parties, never used to train external models, and can be deleted at any time upon request.
Can a student use Markaroo without their school?
Yes. Students can sign up on their own, start on the free plan, and upgrade to Plus from £6.99 a month, with a 7-day free trial and the option to add more subjects for £5 each. It works whether or not their school uses Markaroo.
Can we still use it just to mark mocks?
Yes. Upload a whole paper, handwritten scripts included, and get marks and criterion-referenced feedback against the real mark scheme, for you to review before anything is released. Schools use it to supplement their own marking, not replace it: more practice for students without extra workload for staff.
